With the exception of Chemistry I, there is no new work assigned over break. Have a great Winter Break, and a Happy New Year.
Chemistry: Complete the Naming Ionic Compounds WS assigned today, and make your flash cards. All of this is due on Monday, January 3, 2011!
A blog where you can find out what we are doing in class, what homework is due, and odds and ends that might be interesting.

Physics: today we were in the computer lab, analyzing data from the Atwood's Machine Lab. For Monday after break, students are to have their graphs and data tables in their lab books, relationships identified, and line equations written.
AP Chemistry: We spent the hour working on post-lab for the Molar Volume of a Gas Lab. This will be due Tuesday after break. We will also be starting CH 10 when we get back.
Chemistry: Today we went over the assigned ionic nomenclature problems. We reviewed what students are supposed to do to write those equations, and come up with the correct names. After questions, I assigned the rest of the WS for homework tomorrow.
I also assigned the making of flash cards for naming ionic compounds. Students are to make flash cards of all transitions metals and polyatomic ions on their yellow-green cheat sheet. One side should have the name, and the other side the symbol and ionic charge. They should also make these for all group 14 elements.
Physical Science: We took the Unit 8 Exam today. We will look over tests tomorrow.

Physics: On Monday students were to discuss the unit review assignment given to them on Friday. They prepared whiteboards for the force diagram problems, which we discussed today in class. Tuesday, they watched a video. Today we discussed the review assignment in class and took questions. Students were assigned to make their own force problem, complete with solution for class tomorrow. This will eb the final review before the unit test on Friday.
AP Chemistry: On Monday students were to finish their Activity Series lab, which was collected today. On Tuesday, students were assigned a Take-Home Unit Quiz, which is due on January 17. They then were to start reading Chapter 9 for class today. We will be taking the Chapter 9 quiz and collecting homework on Monday. The next lab, which is the Molar volume of a gas will be on Tuesday of next week.
Chemistry: On Monday this classes watched a video. Yesterday, lab groups got together and discussed the lab results from Friday's Sticky Tape Lab. Today we looked at what students had discussed, and follow-ed up with some notes on electrostatic forces in atoms.
Physical Science: On Monday these classes watched a video. On Tuesday, students were to read Chapter 8, Section2 in the text book, and work on Worksheet 2. Also, the section questions were assigned as extra credit. Some students took advantage of this, many did not. The assignment was due at the end of the hour. Today, we did lecture notes on the same section from the book, as students had many questions about this material. I gave them back their Worksheet 2 assignment in case they wanted to make any changes.
A note about commendations and deficiencies: Since I was absent when these were due, only deficiencies were printed off for this quarter. I had them done prior to the weekend. Many students were inline to receive commendations, but I was not able to get them printed. I apologize for this, and if you have any questions, please let me know.

We are nearing the mid way point of 2nd Quarter. As it stands, this blog has been up and running for nearly 3 months. In approximately 90 days, there have been 280 views of this blog. I am trying to decide how many unique individuals are coming to this site.
If you are a parent or a student will you please e-mail me at tschwall@shiocton.k12.wi.us and let me know: How often you use the site, what you like about it, and what you would like to see added (if anything). Thanks for your efforts.
Physics: Today we reviewed for tomorrow's quiz. After the quiz, students will be assigned the unit review assignment, which will be due on Monday.
AP Chemistry: Today we took the Unit Exam on the Quantum Model of the Atom. It went well. Tomorrow we start a whole new unit. The Activity Series Lab will be due on Tuesday of next week.
Chemistry: Today we took notes on the development of atomic theory. No new homework was given.
Physical Science: Progress reports were handed out. Please ask for them this evening so you can see your child's progress. We also did an activity to look at the solubility of salt and sugar in water. There is no homework for tomorrow's class.

Physics: Today we went over the homework from last Friday. Tomorrow we will work on some other problems, gearing up for our quiz on Thursday.
AP Chemistry: We completed the Activity Series Lab, and tomorrow will be our Chapter 9 Quiz.
Chemistry: We discussed the particle diagrams students did for the mixture demos we did last week. We will explore the differences between mixtures and compounds tomorrow. Also, I printed off progress reports for students, so expect to see those at home.
Physical Science: Today we checked and discussed the graphs students made on Friday, relating the atomic radius of elements to their atomic number. This graph also shows the periodic nature of the properties of elements. I then assigned the Unit 5 Review for our test on Wednesday.

Here are some pictures of the Atom Models that students made this year. I have graded one class worth of atoms, and they are really well done.

Alkali metals in water ( Not the braniac version )
Here is a video showing the periodic nature of elements. The Alkali Metals of group 1 on the Periodic Table, have the same number of valence electrons. These are the electrons located in the outer most energy levels of the atoms. For Alkali Metals this would be 1. This also makes them highly reactive, as it is not difficult for them to lose 1 electron to water. This process creates Hydroxide and Hydrogen gas. Hydrogen gas is quite explosive. Just watch and see.
They all have similar, yet increasing reactive, chemical properties due to this valence electron similarity.

Today, Yearbook came in and took some pictures of the atom models that students built. I hope to have pictures up soon.
Physics: We went over the first 4 problems on WS 3. I assigned the remaining problems for Monday.
AP Chemistry: Students have the Activity Series Lab on Monday. they should have their pre-lab ready for Monday.
Chemistry: We did some particle drawings in class today, based upon the demos we had in class yesterday. The drawings were due by the end of class, so no new homework for Monday.
Physical Science: Today we went over the assignment from yesterday's reading. Then we looked at some samples of elements, and watched some videos that showed the periodic nature of the elements. Along with that, I assigned a graphing activity that was in the book. On page 166, is a set of data that was to be graphed. It should be a line graph of Atomic Number vs. Atomic Radii. The graph, and graph only, is due on Monday.

Physics: We went over some force diagram problems, and I assigned numbers 1-4 for tomorrow.
AP Chemistry: We spent the hour working on homework problems from Chapter 8. I also assigned the lab write-up for the Activity Series Lab. This is due on Monday.
Chemistry: We started getting into how substances behave when they are mixed together. Up to this point, we have only looked at pure substances, that is substances that are made up of only one type of particle or molecule. As we move into how substances combine, we started with looking at mixtures. Mixtures are combination's of pure substances, that are not chemically combined. I did several demos, and we looked at some different things with mixtures. We will be using this material in class tomorrow.
Physical Science: Today I assigned the reading of Chapter 5, Section 3 in the textbook. While reading this section of the book, students were to fill out their note packets with the information that is missing, and then complete a worksheet assignment. The notes and worksheet will be checked tomorrow at the start of the hour.
